If you live in New York or Connecticut and you’ve been wondering if you’re near any ticks, let us answer that right away: You are.
Let’s look at 5 reasons you should schedule a professional to spray your property for ticks this fall:
Reason #1: Fall Is Tick Danger Time
Once the weather starts to cool down, we often toss aside our worries about insects. But fall is one of the worst seasons for these bloodsucking pests.
Ticks have a complex two-year life cycle. Insects in the life stage most likely to bite humans during the fall months frequently carries disease organisms, such as Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, anaplasmosis or ehrlichiosis.
Fall landscapes can also be a great breeding grounds for ticks, which love to hang out in piles of leaves, recently pruned brush and tree branches and wood piles.
Reason #2: Spraying In The Fall Reduces The Tick Population
Ticks mate in the late spring and summer, which means that by fall, female ticks are pregnant. And they stay that way all winter long.
When the first thaw of spring arrives, those pregnant ticks hatch more ticks. A fall tick spray eliminates the pregnant ticks before they can increase the population.
Reason #3: Ticks Carry Dangerous Diseases
Ticks carry all kinds of disease, including the one most infamous in New York and Connecticut — Lyme disease.
Lyme disease is a bacterial infection transmitted by ticks that feed and mate on deer during part of their life cycle.
It was discovered in 1975, after researchers investigated why unusually large numbers of children were being diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis in Lyme, Conn., and two neighboring towns.
In the early stages of Lyme disease, you may experience flu-like symptoms that can include a stiff neck, chills, fever, swollen lymph nodes, headaches, fatigue, muscle aches, and joint pain. In more advanced stages of the disease, nerve problems and arthritis, especially in the knees, may occur.
Reason #4: Fall Brings Critters, And Critters Bring Ticks
Ticks often enter your landscape on the backs of small mammals, including chipmunks, field mice, deer, raccoons, opossums, skunks, weasels, foxes, shrews, moles and squirrels.
The average deer carries 500 ticks. Autumn’s cool nights means more meandering creatures toting ticks onto your property.
Reason #5: It’s A Pain To Do This Chore Yourself
Sure, you could take on this battle by yourself, but it’s kind of a hassle.
It’s important to read the product labels carefully. There are different classifications of products. (Some target only certain types of ticks. Some are meant only for surfaces, like building foundations, and aren’t designed for turf.)
There are different types of formulas with different methods of application. And you need sufficient spray volume and pressure in your sprayer equipment and hose for thorough coverage.
And last but not least, these are potent chemicals — you don’t want to inhale them or get them on your body.
