We’ve watched these classic holiday movies dozens of times, memorizing the best lines and eagerly awaiting our favorite scenes.
But these holiday classics are also gold mines for decorating inspiration. Pop some popcorn and get ready to take notes. Your holiday decorating inspiration is as close as your DVD player!
Take A Hue Cue From Whoville
In “How The Grinch Stole Christmas,” those Whos really know how to brighten up the place. No traditional red and green in Whoville; the whole town is ablaze in eye-popping colors.
Zany decorations in hot pink, bright blue, lime green and vivid orange trumpet holiday cheer. Pile on the multicolor lights, shiny ball ornaments and glittery tinsel.
Over the top? No such thing. While you’re at it, plop some felt reindeer antlers on your pooch, à la Max.
Have A George Bailey Christmas
For many of us, it just isn’t Christmas without a cozy viewing of that classic, “It’s A Wonderful Life.” When the distraught George Bailey returns home to his family on Christmas Eve, the living room is adorned in classic, traditional decorations that take us back to a simpler time: a towering tree adorned with classic ornaments, silvery garlands strung from the ceiling, a glitter-covered “Merry Christmas” sign. All the comforts of the holidays at home.
Don’t forget to hang a shiny bell ornament on one bough. You never know when an angel will get his wings.
Get Out All Your Toys, Ralphie
The opening scene in “A Christmas Story” perfectly captures a kid’s excitement about Christmas — toys, toys, toys, toys!
Press your nose up to a department store window and grab some decorating inspiration from this movie’s classic 1940s toys. Set up a toy train track around your holiday tree and get that engine chugging.
Dig out your old teddy bear and your kids’ wooden alphabet blocks. Pile a classic red wagon full of pine boughs and cones.
Side note: When you take your turkey out of the oven for basting, beware of the neighbors’ dogs.
Snip Snowflakes, Eat Lots Of Sugar
In “Elf,” Buddy the Elf transforms part of Gimbel’s department store into a winter wonderland with an avalanche of cut-paper snowflakes and white paper chains dangling from the ceiling. Grab your kids or a few friends (and a bottle of wine) and get snipping. Watch out for paper cuts!
Optional snack: spaghetti drenched in maple syrup.
Plug In The Lights, Clark!
Nobody knows how to light up a house for the holidays like Clark Griswold in “National Lampoon Christmas Vacation.”
Light it up like Clark: The more lights, the merrier! Don’t want the hassle of a jumble of extension cords or precariously balancing on your icy roof? Call the holiday decor professionals at Neave Decor. We love this stuff.
