Perfecting Your Family’s Backyard Basketball Court Layout

If you have kids, you know there’s a point, as they get older, that suddenly the plastic Fisher-Price basketball set just won’t cut it. If Junior wants to dunk — but he’s 2 feet taller than the hoop — that little hoop’s going to go down.

Maybe it’s time to upgrade from that plastic kids’ hoop to the real deal!

A well-constructed backyard basketball court can be a great way to create even more reasons for your family to spend time outdoors, and it’s an addition that will last a long time.  (If you protect your investment and maintain your court well, it can also boost the value of your home.)

Choose the Right Basketball Court Dimensions

But size can be an issue with seemingly large, hard surfaces. If your property’s not palatial, it might seem you don’t have the square footage to install a basketball court. Good news: There’s a perfect basketball court layout out there for you!

Typical backyard basketball court dimensions are 60 feet by 90 feet (for reference, a regulation NBA court is 50 feet by 94 feet). If your backyard space is limited — but you don’t want to settle for the ol’ “single hoop in the driveway” setup — you could also choose a half-court basketball court layout, which is 30 feet by 50 feet.

Other Basketball Court Layout Considerations

There are other considerations to be made when planning your basketball court layout, including what material you’ll use to construct it (we at Neave Sports love Flexcourt tiles) and where it will be located on your property.

Definitely keep in mind when you’ll be playing the most — an after-school one-on-one shootout, maybe? —and construct your basketball court so that you’re not shooting into direct sunlight, and be sure to allow yourself enough vertical space to get those high shots in without a branch getting in the way.

If size isn’t an issue but your lot has an incline, for instance, you could always create a retaining wall to level out the land and create a flat surface to play on — and build a fence around the court to keep errant balls from rolling down your hill.
